Hair Transplantation Theory

Hair follicles are extracted from the back of the head ( the occiput and parietal areas) which are known as the “safe” donor areas.

There are two types: FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) vs FUT (Strip surgery)

FUE
A. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
After injecting a small amount of local anesthetic, with the patient completely awake, a specially crafted small tool with a diameter of 1 mm or less is used to extract the hairs one by one from the donor area. After the extraction, the doctor will then transplant hairs in the needy areas. The implanted hairs will grow naturally and permanently, and no special care is needed for such hair. The small wound over the donor area will gradually recover and shrink, leaving very inconspicuous scars.
FUT
B. Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
Use a scalpel to cut a piece of scalp about 1 cm in width and 15 cm in length. The assistant will cut the piece of scalp into very tiny portions know as the follicular units which are then placed over the needy areas. The most unpredictable outcome for this surgery is the size of the scar, in experienced hands, the scar can be relatively small, but it also can be rather big and disgusting if the surgeon is not experienced enough or the patient is prone to scarring.
FUE VS FUT

Method Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
Obtaining hair Extract hairs on by one, No suture is needed A strip of scalp is excised, wound is sutured. Strip of scalp is slivered into units.
implantation Use specially made implanters to implant hairs Use sharp tool to make a entry point, then implant hairs with forceps
Amount of anesthetic Small amount Small amount
Removal of stitches NO YES,10-14days after surgery
Slivering of hairs NO YES
Transaction of hair Depends on experience of doctor Depends on experience of assistants
Duration of surgery May need more time, depends on experience of doctors Faster to obtain a strip of scalp ,but it take time to sliver the hairs
Method Use of punches of 0.8 to 1.0mm to extract hair unit by unit Use blade to cut a strip of scalp
Size of wound Multiple tiny wound of 0.8 to 1.0 mm Width 1 cm,length 15cm
Recovery time Faster (2-3days) Takes longer time,to remove stitches after 10-14 days
Pain Less pain More pain
Scar Tiny scar, barely risible if punch used is very small Linear scar, size depends on experience of surgeons
Some people think that FUE has a higher transection rate than that of FUT, this may not be true, In experienced hand, the transection rate can still be kept at a very low level. Regarding FUT, it also faces the problem of transection when the grafts are slivered by assistants. Over the past 10 years, Dr. Lam attended many international Hair Transplantation meetings, seminars and workshops, therefore, apart from sharing with different doctors all over the world the experience in FUE, Dr. Lam also took the chance to learn the FUT surgery. That means that Dr. Lam knows how to do, not only the FUE surgery, but also the FUT one. Both FUE and FUT are equally good, whether to choose which one really depends on a lot of factors after discussion between the patient and the doctors.
