Treatment of Hair Loss
Not all patients are suitable for Hair Transplantation and Hair Transplantation is not the only option. In order to receive the best advice, patients are strongly advised to seek a medical consultation when they have abnormal Hair Loss. Our doctor will examine the scalp and hair under a microscope and blood testing may be needed to find out the causes of Hair Loss. Concomitantly, the health and density of hairs over the donor and potential recipient sites will be examined to see whether medical or surgical treatment is the best option, and an overall treatment plan will be generated subsequently.

A. Medications

Currently, two medications are available: Oral finasteride and Topical minoxidil.

Finasteride is an oral medication approved for treating male pattern baldness by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It effectively reduce the concentration of male hormone (DHT), this, in turn, can slow down Hair Loss and help the regrowth of some hairs. This medication must be taken in a long term manner, and 90% of patients on this drug shows significant slowing down of Hair Loss while improvement is seen in 60% of the cases. This medicine is more effective over the crown area while its effect over the hairline is not obvious. II. Topical Minoxidil
Minoxidil is another medication that can promote hair growth and was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is a topical drug, mainly applied to the scalp so that hair follicles can grow healthily, a minority of patients may suffer from such side effects as redness, itching.

B. Hair Transplantation

Hair follicles are extracted from the back of the head ( the occiput and parietal areas) which are known as the “safe” donor areas. The extracted hairs will be placed over the areas need to be covered. This transplanted hairs are resistant to the hormone, DHT, and will not fall out due to hormonal effects. Hair Transplantation can effectively restore the hairline and the sparse hair becomes more dense. DHT poses no significant harmful effect on the implanted hairs, therefore, these hairs will grow forever. However, not everyone is suitable for Hair Transplantation.
